Rooted in Traditional Chinese medicine, the term gua sha is comprised of two Chinese words: gua, meaning to rub or scrape, and sha, a type of stagnant energy that causes excess heat to build within the body. Taken together, the term gua sha means the act of rubbing the skin to remove an energy blockage. It’s origins started as a means to treat disease, evolving throughout time into and eventually entering the cosmetic aspect in the form of rubbing jade stones on scars. Throughout time, gua sha was passed on through generations through families, who taught by showing and doing. I believe it is important to honor the stories of gua sha’s history and to be mindful of it’s unique journey to the beauty industry version we see today. I have always been drawn to the mindset of more Eastern medicine because I have always felt that it was an honor to the whole body mind connection. I offer these stones as an act of appreciation to that sentiment. And hope that all those who use them make time and create space for this beautiful ritual of self love and care.
